Mount Carmel opens new £1 million technology block

Mount Carmel RC Technology College celebrated the official opening of its £1.3 million state of the art technology block at a special ceremony yesterday afternoon. Councillor James Kempton, Executive Member for Children, cut the ribbon and declared the building open, following a special blessing by Bishop George Stack, Chairman of Westminster Education Diocese Board.<br><br>The new technology block was funded by Islington Council and project-managed by CEA@Islington. The block has been expertly designed and is full of high-tech equipment that will enable the college to meet the growing needs of its specialist status demands.<br><br>The two-storey building has been open for use since October 2004 and contains a graphics room, textile studio, design rooms, a heat bay and a resistant material room. <br><br>Over 80 parents, governors, staff and education officers attended the event and were given a tour of the building and demonstrations of the new equipment by Mount Carmel students. <br><br>Paul Kehoe, Headteacher of Mount Carmel said: ‘Our new technology block is a great facility complete with the most state of the art equipment that all our students can use. These facilities will help us to continue to meet the demands of our specialist technology college status.<br><br>‘I would like to thank Islington Council for the generous funding that made this building possible, CEA@Islington for their project management, and also Chris Eisen, Mount Carmel’s former headteacher, whose vision it was to secure these facilities for our school.’<br><br>Councillor James Kempton, Executive Member for Children said: ‘’Mount Carmel is a highly successful Islington school. GCSE results are meeting national targets and students are winning science awards. The new £1.3 million technology block is packed with the modern facilities that will help raise achievement in design and technology and further improve exam results. <br><br>”The council has invested £40 million in Islington’s schools over the last five years and as a result we now have the New North Community School and the new Golden Lane Campus.
