Islington Council is piloting a weekly kitchen food waste collection service to 14,000 street properties across the borough.<br><br>A recent waste audit of household waste in Islington found that 17% of the average rubbish sack was kitchen food waste. This food waste can still be useful - the collection service takes it away to turn it into compost.<br><br>The easy- to-use system gives residents two containers - one for rubbish and one for food waste. The food waste container has an odour strip and can be stored in the kitchen.<br><br>The food bins can take meat and fish scraps, fruit and vegetable peelings, eggs and egg shells, dairy products, cut flowers, tea bags and coffee grinds.<br><br>Cllr Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability said:<br><br>"Residents have shown us they want to recycle more - the evidence is in the improved recycling rates across the borough.<br><br>Peelings, tea bags and cut flowers can all be composted - saving money and helping the environment.<br><br>The kitchen waste pilot follows the successful extension of the garden waste recycling scheme - all street properties can now recycle their cuttings and clippings, too."<br><br>More information is available from Contact Islington by calling 020 7527 2000 or emailing contact@islington.gov.uk <br>www.islington.gov.uk/recycling<br><br>ENDS
