Council stands firm against waste dumpers

Islington Council’s work to keep the streets clean was supported by the Magistrates Court this week when they successfully prosecuted Net Lounge Limited for repeatedly dumping rubbish.<br><br>The owner of local internet café, Net Loft of Duncan Street, N1 was fined £4,750 on Tuesday 31 May in relation to six separate charges of dumping rubbish in nearby streets. <br><br>The case is an example of the strong stance the council has adopted regarding controlling waste from commercial premises.<br><br>Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for sustainability, said: "Keeping our streets clean benefits everyone and is a key priority for the council and local residents alike.<br><br>When it comes to waste, most premises do the right thing but where they don't - as this case shows - we will take action to protect Islington's environment for everyone."<br><br>This case is a significant win for the council, but reinforces the day-to-day work carried out by enforcement officers on Islington’s streets. In 2004/05 the council issued more than 320 fixed penalty notices of £50 for first offence cases. Since 1 January 2005, more than 50 notices of intended prosecution have been distributed to serial offenders.<br><br>ENDS
