Schools seek Green inspiration for Travel Plans

Schools will be able to get their creative juices flowing for developing a school travel plan (STP) at the Imagine Islington sustainability event in Angel Town Centre on Sunday 19 June. <br><br>The council’s Imagine Islington event is an ideal way for schools to learn more about the environment and develop initiatives for their STP. The event will play host to an assortment of activities including travel awareness information, bike activities and a cycling film, all of which promote sustainable transport.<br><br>Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability, said: "Islington kids care about the environment and the council is committed to making Islington a cleaner, greener place to live.<br><br>School Travel Plans help local schools make a difference to our local environment through walking to school or cycling. What's more, it's fun, healthy and sociable." <br> <br>Greg Crawford, Headteacher of Pooles Park primary school said: "The children really enjoy being outdoors with their friends and it's great to be able to encourage them to walk or cycle to school safely - and they particularly enjoyed meeting Charlie the Giant Chicken!"<br><br>More schools will be able to take advantage of the council’s school travel plans, after Islington secured funding for extra staff to support the schools in this venture.<br><br>The extra staff members will be able to assist schools throughout the process of developing a school travel plan, which is designed to improve the health and safety of our children.<br><br>Schools are provided with travel plan toolkits by the council’s road safety team, which assists them in developing their STP. Grants of £3,750 and £5,000 are provided for primary and secondary schools, respectively, upon completion and approval of their STP.<br><br>Two schools, Canonbury Primary School and Poole’s Park Primary School, have already successfully completed and submitted their STPs in March 2005 and will receive their grant this month.<br><br>Islington will join in the London Sustainability Weeks’ celebration of community action for a cleaner, greener and healthier London through numerous environmentally-themed activities from 5-19 June 2005, culminating in the Imagine Islington family event in Angel Town centre on Sunday 19 June.<br><br>ENDS
