Islington goes wild

Islington Council’s Ecology Centre has organised a range of activities to celebrate Biodiversity Month, which runs until Saturday 18 June 2005. A range of talks, walks and hands-on activities will give Islington residents the chance to find out about the ‘variety of life’ living in the wild on their doorsteps!<br><br>Councillor Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability said: “Ensuring that nature survives in the city is a challenge for all of us in this densely populated corner of London. Islington has some wonderful pockets of green and the council is committed to making sure wildlife thrives in our local area. The themed events run by the Ecology Centre are a great opportunity to get involved and help create a sustainable future for us all.”<br><br>Saturday 18 June<br>· Summer Solstice, Gillespie Park, 6pm-10pm. Join the Friends of Gillespie Park in their annual summer solstice with music from local bands and a barbecue. £6 entry for adults, £3 for children/concession. <br><br>Islington will join in the London Sustainability Weeks’ celebration of community action for a cleaner, greener and healthier London through numerous environmentally-themed activities from 5-19 June 2005, culminating in the Imagine Islington family event on Sunday 19 June.<br><br> The Ecology Centre staff will also run workshops at N1 Shopping Centre, Upper Street, during the Imagine Islington event. Activities will include willow sculpturing, bird-box making, and ‘plant a seed’ exhibits. The London Sustainability Weeks include several theme days such as Living Green Space Day on Sunday 12 June. The award-winning Culpeper Community Garden has chosen this day for an open day with activities such as garden tours, kids’ activities, plant sales and teas and homemade cakes. Culpeper Community Garden will also be hosting activities during the Imagine Islington event. <br><br>· National Gardens Scheme Open Afternoon, 2pm-6pm. Barnsbury Wood will be open along with two local Islington gardens. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet the warden, pick up information on wildlife gardening and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of this small woodland nature reserve.
