Islington Council has now begun consultation on its Draft Sustainable Transport Strategy, covering issues such as parking, public transport, road safety and green travel. The strategy sets out the council’s transport policies, proposals and programmes for the next ten years. So the consultation is an important opportunity for local people and organisations to get their views heard on local transport priorities.

Cllr Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability said: “We all want to move around easily and safely, while protecting our environment, and that's more and more of a challenge.

There are huge pressures on Islington’s streets and public transport services. We are one of the smallest and most densely populated boroughs in the capital, with some of London's busiest routes. What's more, the number of residents and jobs in the borough are going to increase substantially in the next 10-15 years.

This strategy sets out how we can tackle current and future transport challenges - promoting walking and cycling is an important part of it - and we want as many residents and businesses as possible to tell us their views on how best to do it."

The eight-week public consultation period finishes 8 July 2005. During this time, the Consultation Draft Sustainable Transport Strategy will be available on the council’s website where all residents are invited to fill in an online survey. Residents will also be able to comment at local Area Committees, exhibitions and in writing.

For more information on the Consultation Draft Sustainable Transport Strategy or to obtain a Summary Leaflet contact Islington Council:
Telephone 020 7527 2000
Email transportstrategy@islington.gov.uk
Web www.islington.gov.uk/sustainabletransportstrategy

ENDS
