Keeping the noise down in Islington

Date: 03-Jun-05 by Charles Dean

Islington marked Noise Action Week - 23rd to 27th May 2005, with several activities to highlight the work of it's Noise Team in making the borough a quieter place.

Excessive noise whether from bars, alarms, neighbours or building sites can cause misery for residents and impact heavily on their quality of life. The Council's Noise Team can provide a mediation service which often resolves noise complaints to the satisfaction of residents and businesses.

As part of activities noise officers have been delivering the council’s updated Code of Construction Practice directly to building sites in the area. The code outlines the standards builders must adhere to when carrying out construction in Islington, such as limiting noisy work to the hours of 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays. The code also provides guidance on other considerate building practices, such as keeping building sites clean.

Executive Member for Public Protection, Councillor George Allan, praised the code and the work of the council’s Noise Team:

“Islington is booming, with several major building projects in the borough - so getting builders to abide by the code, benefits our residents, the environment and the contractors themselves - for example by avoiding prosecution.

We understand noise problems can cause people distress and for that reason we have a dedicated noise service which can be contacted on 020 7527 3258.

This is just one of the ways we are making life better in Islington.”

Noise action week follows a highly successful project to donate confiscated music equipment to youth projects in Barnard Park for DJ workshops.

ENDS
