Bag up your garden waste and we'll collect it for free

Date: 31-May-05 by Charles Dean

Islington Council is extending its weekly green garden waste collection scheme on June 6 in a bid to help protect the environment, and further improve services to residents, while boosting the borough's recycling rate.

With more people taking advantage of the summer weather to get out in the garden, there's never been a better time to bag up those grass cuttings, hedge clippings, leaves and weeds.

Formerly available to 9,000 households in a pilot scheme, the initiative is now open to all street side properties.

The garden waste will be turned into compost rather than going to landfill - so avoiding a cost to the environment and the tax payer.

Cllr Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability said:

"Increasing recycling and promoting greener lifestyles is a priority for the council. Residents have told us they agree that recycling in Islington should be even easier so I am delighted it's now possible for more people than ever to recycle garden waste.

Nearly a quarter of the average Islington resident's bin is green waste - so turning it into compost rather than sending it to landfill really makes environmental sense. This is one of many initiatives in Islington, helping local people improve our environment now and for the future."

ENDS
