Mayor's art competition helps Islington kids celebrate peace

Islington will be marking the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II - thanks to a £50,000 of local events and projects organised to mark and celebrate VE and VJ Days.<br><br>Street parties, displays, entertainment and art projects are among the activities being held for young and old in the borough over the summer.<br><br>And Islington’s primary schools are being asked to submit entries for an art competition to the Mayor’s Office by the end of the summer term (22 July). Judging will take place during the week of 12 September and the Mayor will announce winners of the competition on 27 September. The winning entry will win £50 for the artist and £450 for his or her school. Work will be exhibited in the Town Hall during September.<br><br>Announcing the art competition this week to mark VE Day celebrations in Islington, Islington's Mayor, Councillor Joan Coupland said: "I'm delighted to launch the primary schools’ art competition which plays an important part in helping Islington children understand the significance of the war and the contribution made by our communities. It's part of a whole series of events to mark the end of the war -stretching from now until VJ Day on 15 August."<br><br>ENDS<br><br>Details of the competition:<br><br>1. Entries are invited from all Islington primary schools to mark the end of World War II<br><br>2. Entries should be a painting or pencil drawing, slightly smaller than A3. Felt tip pictures will not be accepted. <br><br>3. Schools can enter up 6 drawings.<br><br>4. Entries should be sent to the Mayor’s Office, the Town Hall, Upper Street, London N1 by Friday 22nd July 2005.<br><br>5. Entries will be judged by the Mayor of Islington and Councillor James Kempton, Executive Member for Children’s Services and the winners announced 27 September 2005.<br><br>6. First prize is £500 - £50 for an individual pupil and £450 for your school<br> Second Prize is £250 - £25 for an individual pupil and £225 for your school<br> Third prize is £100 - £15 for an individual pupil and £85 for your school<br><br>7. There will be an exhibition of the artwork during September 2005 in the Town Hall
