Islington’s Mayor, Councillor Joan Coupland, came out onto the Town Hall steps to welcome the school council from St Joan of Arc primary school on Thursday 10 March. The 17 pupils, who are elected by classmates in a secret ballot every two terms, were on a fact-finding mission to investigate Islington Council’s democratic processes and the role of the Mayor.Islington’s Mayor Councillor Joan Coupland said: “Getting young people involved in decisions that affect their lives is important which is why I was delighted to welcome the children to the Town Hall. School councils are a great way to involve children and let them take on some responsibility for decision-making. And, today’s school council members could well become tomorrow’s councillors and take their seat in Islington’s council chamber!” Like the Mayor, the school council at St Joan of Arc carry out fundraising activities and welcome visitors. In addition, they are consulted over school improvements, raise issues of concern, give assemblies and liaise with the school ‘s governors.EndsFor further information please contact:Caroline RoweCEA@IslingtonT: 020 7527 5545E: Caroline.Rowe.cea@islington.gov.uk Photograph· Mayor Joan Coupland greets pupils from the school council of St Joan of Arc School on the town hall steps.
