If you live or work around Archway, now is the time to give us your views on transforming the area into a town centre fit for the 21st century.Islington Council is putting an ‘options document’ out for consultation throughout March. The comments and suggestions received will then be used to draw up a more detailed brief on the project, due to be published early this summer. Revitalising Archway has been a long-held desire of both residents and the council. Depending on what the community says it needs, the area could be spruced up or totally reinvented, complete with new shops, affordable homes, better transport links and new public spaces. People are being asked to comment on several options for each of the three main priorities:>Activities – any new development could include flats, shops and new and improved community facilities. We want to know which ones the public most want to see>The buildings – Archway Tower is unattractive and creates a wind tunnel effect around it. Demolishing and redeveloping the Tower and the surrounding buildings on the Mall is one suggested option. This could dramatically change the look and feel of Archway>Transport – the options are aimed at keeping traffic moving, improving access and safety of pedestrians and helping buses keep to their timetablesCouncillor Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability said: “Many people tell us Archway has been neglected for years. The council has big plans for turning Archway into the vibrant and modern town centre the borough deserves. We need to have plans that are successful and add up, but we are also committed to making it a place that meets the community’s needs, with lasting benefits to Islington. That’s why your views matter.”The council has been gathering feedback from the public on the plans for Archway for some time. This consultation is aimed at ensuring people’s most up to date concerns and issues are taken into account. You can let us know your views in one of the following ways:q attending the exhibition – discuss the options, implications and your ideas with staff from Islington Council on March 17, 21 and 31 between 10am-2pm and 4pm-8pm, and 19 March between 10am-4pm, at Archway Library, Archway Mallq visiting Archway Library during March, where you can obtain further information on the plansq attending the North Area Committee meeting on April 4 in the Postgraduate Lecture Theatre, Holborn Union Building, UCL Archway Campus, Highgate Hill, N19 5LW, from 7.30pmq logging onto www.islington.gov.uk to find out more and register your viewsEnds
