Islington Council

Find out more about Turkey at your local library

Date: 23-Mar-05 by Nicola Quinn

"Turks, Books and Music" is the latest promotion to hit Islington Council's libraries. Launched this week, in partnership with Milet Publishing, the initiative comines books about Turkey and books by Turkish authors as well as a wide variety of music.

The promotion is inspired by the blockbuster exhibition "Turks -a journey of a Thousand Years, 600 - 1600" by Royal Academy of Arts. The collections in all libraries embrace a large variety of books about Turkish history, cultural and culinary choices and contemporary Turkish literature, including Yasar Kemal author of "Mehmed my hawk", Orhan Pamuk author of "My Name is Red" who won the 2003 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.

Cllr Laura Willoughby, executive member for communities, said "This is a wonderful opportunity for residents to sample some of Turkey's rich culture from the convenience of their local library."

There is a book and music list which accompanies the promotion and is available from your local library or on the Turkish Tourist office's website www.gototurkey.co.uk. This special promotion will be displayed at all Islington libraries until the end of May.
