Negin Damali Amiri and Sophia Simpson, both Year 11 students at Mount Carmel RC Technology College, were invited to the prestigious British Association for the Advancement of Science's Creativity in Science and Technology (CREST) awards at the Royal Society earlier this month.
16-year-old Negin and 15-year-old Sophia won their invitation after taking first place in the regional CREST silver awards, held at London Metropolitan University. Only 11 teams nationally were invited to the finals. Both students will now be working to take part in the CREST gold awards next summer.
This is for students aged 16+ and involves 100 hours of project work. Students are linked with a mentor from industry or higher education, and work on the project can accredit Nuffield Bursary placements and Engineering Education Scheme (EES) project work
.
Students who have completed BA CREST project work have the opportunity to display their work at Regional Finals. Outstanding projects are selected for the prestigious national BA CREST Science Fair.
Councillor James Kempton, executive member for children explained: "Well done to Negin and Sophia on taking first place in the regional CREST awards. I'd like to wish them luck in the Gold awards later this year.
"We want to get more young people interested in Science and the CREST awards are a great way to motivate students, build their confidence and encourage them to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology. "Highbury Fields already specialises in science and we are looking into ways that we can help young people's achievement in science."
