Shops on Essex Road will benefit from 35 new pay and display bays Islington Council has installed along sections of the busy thoroughfare.Local traders have been concerned that shoppers had limited parking facilities in the area. Transport for London (TfL), formally objected to the councils proposals saying that they will cause delays to the 38 bus route. The Council acknowledges that Essex Road is a busy route, so the 35 new parking spaces will operate outside rush hour times to minimize disruption to bus passengers.Currently the bays are only experimental so that the effect on traffic along Essex Road can be monitored. The bays will be reviewed after six month’s operation, and if there is little disruption to bus traffic, the bays could become permanent. The spaces are in addition to the 78 pay and display spaces already available for shoppers to use in neighbouring roads, 35 north of Cross Street and 34 to the south. The council produced maps showing the locations of these parking spaces for local traders to give to their customers as they are not visible from the Essex Road. Councillor George Allan, executive member for customer focus said;“We have listened to local traders and worked hard to deal with TfL’s very strong objections to extra parking here. We are confident that our solutions will work out and we can make the extra spaces permanent.” NotesTfL's Bus Priority Team objected to the new bays on the grounds that they would cause delays to buses on the 38 bus route.Pay and display parking will be introduced in the following locations:4 spaces outside 414-422 Essex Road2 spaces outside 338 Essex Road4 spaces outside 81-87 Ockendon Road to 374 Essex Road4 spaces outside 354-364 Essex Road4 spaces outside Texaco fuel filling station2 spaces outside 310-312 Essex RoadOn the southern section of Essex Road pay and display parking bays will be introduced in the following locations:7 spaces outside 122-133 Essex Road8 spaces outside 158-168 and Chelsea Court
