Last night (24 February 2005) at a full council meeting Islington set its council tax for 2005/06.Including the GLA precept, Band D properties will increase by just under £1 a week to £1,156.61 from £1,107.38 - a rise of £49.23 or 4.45%.The rise is less than last year, lower than neighbouring boroughs and keeps Islington below the London average. Just six years ago Islington had the highest charges in London. Executive councillor for resources Arnie Gibbons said: "Council Tax rises are hard for those on fixed incomes - so once again we will be keeping Islington’s tax below the average for London - despite the Mayor's share of the tax increasing by 5.5%. We have increased expenditure on frontline services, for example an additional £2m+ is going into cleaner streets, more rubbish collection and a better environment. And an extra £7m is going into schools. We are committed to striving for excellent, value for money services and putting residents at the centre of everything the council does."Valuation Bands 2004-05 (£) 2005-06 (£)A 738.26 771.08B 861.29 899.59C 984.34 1,028.10D 1,107.38 1,156.61E 1,353.47 1,413.63F 1,599.55 1,670.65G 1,845.64 1,927.69H 2,214.76 2,313.22ends
