Libraries in Islington are changing and now more people are using them. At N4 almost 5000 people who weren't members of an Islington library have joined in the last year.Councillor James Kempton, executive member for children said: "For a library that has only been open for just over a year this is fantastic. Our libraries are changing and N4 is an excellent example of a library with something for everyone. Over recent years we have invested more than £2 million in upgrading our libraries, and we are committed to continuing to improve them." Since opening in January 2004 N4 has become one of the busiest libraries in Islington with: 175,000 visits almost 5000 people, who weren't members of an Islington library before have joined a third of them children 185,000 books, dvds, cds, videos and computer games have been borrowedThe new N4 library cost £1m and is part of a partnership with City & Islington College Centre for Life long Learning. The library is well stocked with over 31,000 items. An excellent selection of all the new and best books presented in attractive themed collection, cds, dvds, videos, pc and playstation games.The library has all you would expect of a modern library, incorporating the best features of successful bookshops with new developments in shelving and display. There are also browsing areas and comfortable seating to read the papers or choose a book.'N4' library has 10 computers with free internet access and library can take advantage of a new service called 'Bridges to Learning' where people can get help with basic English, Maths, Computers and other skills. Bridges to Learning on the first floor of the library has eight additional computers and staff support.'N4' library is open six days a week. Monday 9.30am - 8pm Tuesday 9.30am - 8pm Wednesday 9.30am - 5pm Thursday 9.30am - 8pm Friday 9.30am - 5pm Saturday 9.30am - 5pm. The library is accessible for wheelchairs.Central Library also opens seven days a week and all libraries are open some evenings. The council's libraries have over 60 computers, all with free internet access and office software. There are also two learning centres offering tutored first step computer training. Islington Council is investing in it's libraries and many, including Archway, Central, Finsbury and Mildmay have undergone improvements including major refurbishments. Libraries are free, and very easy to join - simply bring along two current and official proofs of address (e.g. bank statement, utilities bill, tenancy agreement, etc.) to your local library, fill in a simple form and you will be issued with your library card straight away.
