School Children Tackle A1 Grot Spot

Year Six Pupils from Canonbury Primary School have accepted Groundwork’schallenge to clean up a grot spot on Highbury Corner, part of Islington Council's A1 Borough Project.The children, who will be supervised by Groundwork staff, Councillor Bridget Fox and a teacher will clean and paint planters outside the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity shop. The management of the shop is also supporting the community clean upby providing refreshments for the children.Aida Knight, from Groundwork’s community team, was quick to pay tribute tothe children: “The children are eager to get involved in practical activities and contribute to their community. If any other groups want to clean up an eyesore on the A1 Corridor, contact us and we are able to help!. ”Jay Henderson, head teacher at Canonbury School, said: “I am delighted thatour children are getting involved with such an important project in the community, I hope that Canonbury pupils will help contribute to making our area a more colourful and bright place to live and work in.”Groundwork is working with local residents along the A1 Borough to identifyand clean up “grot spots”. Typically activities include removing graffitiand flyposting, clearing rubbish, planting, cleaning walls and pavementsand painting. This complements other work already planned by Islington Council for the A1 Borough Project.Councillor Bridget Fox executive member for sustainability said: "All our consultations tell us that making Islington cleaner, greener and safer is a top priority for local people, and that's what our A1 Borough project is all about.
