Residents want parking controls in St Georges

Date: 15-Feb-05 by Kate Barlow

Residents have supported plans to introduce controlled parking zones (CPZs) in the wards of St Georges North and St Georges South. 69% of respondents in St Georges North voted yes to all day parking controls and 74% showed their support in St Georges South.Residents and businesses in both wards were consulted in November 2004 to see if they wanted the parking protection offered by a CPZ. The consultation saw a response rate of 20% in St Georges North while St Georges South had 15% of consultation questionnaires returned. The consultation questionnaire gave scope for supporting either three options for all day parking controls (with or without Saturdays) or opting for part time parking controls, Monday to Friday between 10am and 2pm.In St George’s North, 57% wanted all-day controls, including those who wanted all or part-day Saturday controls, while 26% wanted four-hour controls. In St George’s South the equivalent figures were 65% for all-day controls, with only 20% for four-hour controls. [The full results are given below].The majority of respondents in both consultations said they did not want parking controls during the weekend.Cllr Allan, executive member for customer service, said:“Residents have given very clear support for controlled parking zones in their area and told us that all-day parking controls suit their needs best.”The consultation results will be presented to the North Area Committee on Monday 21 February where traffic engineers will recommend that the schemes go ahead.
