Islington Council is consulting with local residents, businesses, and users of Highbury & Islington Station on how the Highbury Corner area could be improved. A series of workshops, information exhibitions, drop ins and area committee meetings will be used to gather the views of local people. Currently the Highbury Corner area and Highbury & Islington Station do not reflect the area’s importance as a major gateway where transport infrastructure converges and the old layout has not been altered to reflect the increased traffic and pedestrian volumes. A planning framework is being produced to guide future development. It provides detailed guidance for development sites and will be an important document in deciding any planning applications that are submitted. The framework includes: · The long-term goal to remove the one way gyratory system that operates around the Highbury Corner central island · Improving the transport interchange (bus, rail and tube) · The redevelopment of Highbury & Islington Station and other key sites around the Highbury Corner area · The existing and future public access to the central island area; and · Improving the pedestrian environment The purpose of this consultation is to ensure that the views of local people are taken into account before the council finalises the planning framework later in the spring. Cllr Bridget Fox, executive member for sustainability said: "Improving Islington's environment is not just about parks and public spaces - people care about our roads and stations, too. Highbury Corner is at the heart of our borough and is used by up to 40,000 people a day: but the messy mix of buidings and noisy roundabout don't do justice to Islington. The draft plans are an exciting part of the A1 Borough strategy - a regeneration scheme that we hope will spread along the length of the borough's busiest thoroughfare."
