The Proposed Scheme

The Proposed Scheme

Islington Council was one of the first local authorities to encourage residents to purchase smaller, more energy efficient vehicles. At the moment, the cost of a residents' parking permit is 20 percent lower for vehicles with an engine capacity of less than 1400cc and for other cleaner-fuel vehicles. Residents who own electric cars receive their residents' permit free of charge.

Banding System

The DVLA has a banding system that rates vehicles according to how much carbon dioxide (CO2) they emit. Parking permit charges would be based on this system. Vehicles emitting the lowest amount of CO2 would be in Band A and would be charged the least. Vehicles emitting the highest levels of CO2 would be in Band G and would be charged the most.

The DVLA only has information on CO2 emissions for vehicles registered on or after 1 March 2001. Residents with older vehicles will have their cars categorised into the bands according to the size of their engines.

In general, vehicles with larger engines tend to be more polluting. However because other factors such as make, model, age of vehicle, level of maintenance, and type of fuel used also influence how much CO2 is emitted, the DVLA has advised that no direct correlation can be made between engine size and CO2 emissions. It is not therefore possible to say, for example, that a vehicle within the DVLA’s Band C is directly comparable in terms of emissions to vehicles with a specific engine size.

How Do I Find Out My Engine Size or CO2 emissions?

Your vehicle registration document (V5), issued by the DVLA, gives details of both your engine size and CO2 emissions in section four. Alternatively you can go to the DVLA website (please see the link on the right of this page) - click on vehicle enquiry and type in your vehicle registration number and make.

You can also find the details for your make and model of vehicle on the Vehicle Certification Agency website (see the link on the right of this page).
