Highbury Corner Roundabout

Consultation Dates: 12 November 2007 to 14 January 2008

Giant step forward for Islington’s “most used, least loved” public space

Plans for a multi-million pound makeover of Highbury Corner are back on the drawing board - after the Mayor of London formally threw his weight behind the scheme.

It comes as the results of a public consultation are announced, revealing that most local people want the western ‘arm’ of the roundabout to be closed off to regular traffic.

This would mean the area around Highbury and Islington rail station could be improved, allowing pedestrians to stroll into the green space currently isolated at the centre of the gyratory.

The consultation report can be accessed via the Transport for London website, at: www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/projectsandschemes/5324.aspx

Islington Council and Transport for London will also work together on proposals to improve the station and move the post office to the north side of the roundabout.

Cllr James Kempton, Leader of Islington Council, said: “We’ve said before that Highbury Corner is one of the most used, least loved areas of Islington. There’s a fantastic green space right in the middle that the public would love to get their hands on – but it’s sealed off by all the traffic around it.

“The council and local people have been pressing for improvements to Highbury Corner and the station for years. I am therefore delighted that we’ve found a way forward.”

The plan agreed by the Mayor of London and Islington Council will build on the funding already committed to the East London Line extension to Highbury and Islington and improvements to the North London line. This will see train services increase from four trains an hour to 16 trains an hour at peak times.

Further public consultation will take place before any final decisions are made. More information will be available shortly.
