Hate Crime

Hate Crime

Islington Council is working closely with the police and other agencies to increase reporting of hate crimes and provide an appropriate response to victims. As part of this work non-police reporting sites are available to encourage reporting by victims or witnesses who may be reluctant to contact the police directly.

A hate crime is a crime or harassment motivated by hatred of another person simply because of their race, gender, colour, religion, disability, age or sexuality. Domestic violence is also classed as a hate crime.

Hate crime includes everything from minor incidents such as verbal abuse, threatening behaviour or malicious communications, right through to the most serious crimes. It can be broken down into the following types of incident:

  • Disability incident - any incident which is motivated by hatred of someone on the grounds of their disability.

  • Racial incident - any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person.

  • Faith hate incident - any incident which is perceived to be motivated by faith or religious hatred.

  • Homophobic incident - any incident which is perceived to be homophobic by the victim or any other person.

  • Transphobic incident – any incident which is perceived to be motivated by hatred of someone on the grounds of their transgender or transsexuality.

  • Domestic violence incident.

All incidents can be reported by the victim, or any other person who witnesses the incident and believes it to be a hate crime.

There are currently eight sites across the borough (listed below) where hate crimes can be reported. The sites serve as an initial point of contact for victims/witnesses of hate crime and trained staff/volunteers will be on hand to take reports. Where the victim/witness leaves contact details they will usually receive a response from the police within 72 hours. In an emergency always contact 999.

Hate crimes can be reported at the sites below.
