Throwing things at a newly married couple is a very old tradition that may
date back to ancient Rome or Egypt or even further back. The custom is
intended to give newlyweds good luck and most of the items thrown represent
fertility and abundance. Grains such as wheat and rice were thrown over
newlyweds in the hope that the couple would be prosperous and have many
children to work the land.
Today’s confetti is made up of small pieces of paper, plastic, or dried petals
and is available in a wide variety of colours, shapes and sizes.
Everyone loves to throw confetti and boxes of confetti are available to buy at
the Town Hall from a vending machine near reception. However, we do ask that
it is thrown outside the Town Hall and not inside. Confetti can also be bought
at numerous card and stationery shops in and around Islington and the City of
London.
We would ask that you do not throw rice as it will attract birds and can make
the steps unsafe.
