Getting An Education

Getting An Education

Starting School

Starting school can be a very traumatic experience for both children and their parents or carers! Hopefully this section will be able to take some of the worry out of finding out about sending your child to school, college or university in Islington.

By law, children must be educated from ages 5-16. The majority of children in England are educated at school, although some parents decide to teach their children at home.

Finding a School

Making sure you select the right school for you and your child is one of the most important decisions for a parent or carer.

Islington currently has 47 primary schools, ten secondary schools, three special schools and five Pupil Referral Units. From 2009 the borough will also be home to the City of London Academy. These are all run by CEA@islington, which has a contract to provide schools services to the London Borough of Islington until 2011. For more information see the link on the right under Useful Websites.

Starting College

So you've finished your GCSEs but what now? You may decide to stay on at school. Most of Islington's secondary schools offer a sixth form facility. But you can also carry on further education at college. Whether it is A-levels, BTECs, HNDs or retakes, college could be the place for you.

The main college in Islington is City and Islington College which offers a huge range of courses.

If you would like to study outside Islington then visit www.londoncolleges.com which will give you contact details for many higher education colleges in the capital.

Starting University

More and more students are going to university and competition to get into the best universities and onto popular courses is tougher than ever.

Two universities are based in the borough:

Many students also have to get loans to help them through their courses. The Student Loans Company is part of the government's financial support package for students embarking on a course of higher education in the UK, and are available to help students meet their living costs while studying
