LAA Residents Survey
LAA Residents Survey
We have collected information about local people’s attitudes and experience of
living in Islington. We also asked some questions about healthy living, such
as their consumption of fruit and vegetables and smoking.
A baseline survey was conducted in 2006 and a further survey was conducted in
2007. The attached research report shows the results of each survey.
In each case a representative sample of 1,000 Islington residents was asked a
series of questions in a face-to-face question in their homes. A survey was
also undertaken with 200 young people aged 11-17 (with the permission of their
parents/careers).
Some of the results of the most recent survey are:
-
Four in five Islington residents (79%) are satisfied with their local area as
a place to live.
-
82% of people feel safe walking alone during the day and 50% feel safe walking
alone at night.
-
79% of people said they know their neighbours and 66% said some people or many
people living in their neighbourhood can be trusted.
-
51% of people use parks and open spaces in Islington at least once a week and
three quarters of residents are satisfied with the quality of local green
spaces.
-
69% of residents were satisfied with the cleanliness of the borough.
-
24% of residents are smokers but over half (57%) intend to stop smoking.
-
26% of residents ate at least five portions of fruit or vegetables the day
before they were surveyed. One in eight didn’t eat any!
-
Four in ten residents take vigorous physical activity at least once a week.
-
Nearly half (47%) of residents feel they can influence decisions affecting
their local area.
Highlights from the survey of 200 young people aged 11-17 are:
-
87% of young people are satisfied with Islington as a place to live. Only 2%
were dissatisfied.
-
85% of young people think people from different backgrounds get on well
together in their local area.
-
Crime is the most frequently mentioned concern, followed by not enough being
done for young people.
-
Most young people (85%) felt safe in their neighbourhood.
-
One in six (17%) said bullying was a big problem at their school.
-
Two thirds (66%) use parks at least once a week and three quarters are
