Cemeteries

St Pancras cemetery circa 1900

Islington and Camden Cemetery Services (ICCS) is a joint service set up in June 2004 by the London Boroughs of Islington and Camden.

Islington and Camden Cemetery Services run four cemeteries, three of which offer choices of new graves, the other being closed. Each
cemetery has a unique character, and features a chapel where burial services may be held. We can offer both consecrated and non-consecrated burial sections to provide for all denominations. In order to preserve the peace, tranquillity and high maintenance standard of the sites dogs are only allowed on leads.

It also maintains important parkland and wildlife habitats. Memorial gardens at these sites provide an opportunity for the public to remember their loved ones in a quiet and peaceful environment.

Bereavement

Headstones in Islington Cemetery

The death of a loved one can be a traumatic and lonely experience. The way people deal with grief is very personal and there is no right or wrong way to express how you feel when someone has died. But there is plenty of support and help available to you.

There are a number of organisations that need to be informed of a death:

  • The DSS site provides information about new bereavement benefits for husbands and wives. See the link under Useful Websites on the right for more details.
  • The Inland revenue provides information about inheritance tax and what to do to get further information. See the link under Useful Websites on the right for more details.

You will also need to inform:

  • your bank
  • your insurance company
  • your pension company

To register a death of an Islington resident click the link "Births and Deaths" in the Related Information box on the right.

To register a death of a Camden resident click the lick "Camden Registrar" in the Useful Websites box on the right.

FAQ's

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions. Please see the downloadable document section at the bottom of this page. If your question has not been answered please contact the cemetery office.

Genealogy

If you would like to research your family history the office is open for free searches from 9.30am – 3.30pm Monday to Friday. If you wish us to search for you please write to us with as much information as possible. Full name, burial date, home address and enclosing a fee of £45 for a maximum 3 searches.

Grass Cutting

Under the terms and conditions of our current grounds maintenance contract, grass in all areas of the cemetery is cut a minimum of every 4-6 weeks. Please note that the removal of grass cuttings is not included in the contract at present. However we are looking to review this in the future. Please be aware that the grass will be longer at different times of the month depending on where in the cycle the grass cutters are i.e. if you visit a day after the grass is cut, the area will be short however if your visit is 3 weeks into that cycle then the grass will have grown and will be longer.

Maps

To download a map of each cemetery please go to downloadable documents at the bottom of this page.

Memorial Safety Inspections

We are currently testing all memorials located in our cemeteries. It is the owner of the "Right of Burials" responsibility to maintain the memorial and if it fails we will write to you. For more information on which area of the cemetery we are currently testing and how we test or what to do next if your memorial fails, please see the downloadable documents section at the bottom of this page.
