Private Properties and Rented Accommodation

If you are looking to buy or rent a property, there are many sources of information that can help you with your search. Here are some suggestions to get you started.

Online

See the list of links on the right hand side.

In Print

Most local papers have a property section that will include advertisements of properties for sale and rent. There are often pages towards the back of the section where landlords advertise more affordable accommodation and rooms to let. The properties advertised are usually local to the newspapers’ distribution area. The main local papers for the Islington area are the Islington Gazette and the Islington Tribune.

The Evening Standard is the best-known London newspaper and advertises properties for rent. Loot is a weekly publication that has a large section with properties to let. Copies can be viewed free at the Housing Aid Centre. You can also view the advertisements on their website. Time Out (weekly) and Dalton’s Weekly (weekly) also carry adverts for properties to let.

Estate Agents and Lettings Agents

Most people with a property to sell in the UK use an estate agent. There are also letting agents who let and manage rooms, flats and houses for private landlords. If you have money and the references, going to a letting agent will save you a lot of time. You can find a list of estate agents and lettings agents that operate in Islington by looking in your local papers, Thomson Local Directories and the Yellow Pages.

Notice Boards

Shop windows and notice boards often have cards on them advertising flats, rooms or houses towards the cheaper end of the market. Some supermarkets also have notice boards sometimes advertising accommodation to let.

Friends and Family

Friends, family and workmates can be a good source of information about rooms or flats to rent. So it is a good idea to let everyone know that you are looking for somewhere to live.

'Finding a Home' has more information on renting in the private sector along with tips on successful renting. For more information, click on the Finding a Home link on the right, under Related Information.
