Strategy

A1 Corridor Communities

The A1 Borough Strategy was developed in 2004 and 2005 with significant input from local residents, businesses and key stakeholders including Transport for London. We have worked with designers, landscape architects and planners to develop a strategy that will guide our long-term planning for the A1.

The strategy is based around improvements in eight key areas. These areas are the key places that local people told us were the most important – where they want to cross the road, go to school or university, access facilities, enter or leave the borough, or meet friends.

The eight key areas, also called ‘stitches’, are as follows:

1. Goswell Road
2. Angel
3. Highbury Corner
4. St Mary Magdalene Church
5. Holloway
6. Nags Head
7. Whittington Park
8. Archway

The strategy follows 12 key principles that local people have told us are most important for guiding the future of the borough:

  • Clean A1 - removing litter, graffiti and street clutter

  • Safe A1 - making the A1 safer and more secure

  • Green A1 - better green spaces

  • Healthy A1 - encouraging active life styles and tackling air and noise pollution

  • Smart A1 - improving access to learning and new technology

  • Timed A1 - using the street in different ways at different times, for example, organising festivals and community events

  • Trading A1 - making the A1 a better place to trade and do business

  • Creative A1 - supporting and improving access to the arts

  • Accessible A1 - making it easier and quicker for everyone to get around

  • Shared A1 - creating improved areas for pedestrians

  • Diverse A1 - celebrating and supporting diverse communities and places along the A1

  • Testing A1 - trying out ideas to improve the street and keeping them if they work

This 10-15-year project will only succeed if we work with local people, businesses, partner organisations and other relevant groups every step of the way.
