Offering apprenticeships is an important part of Islington Council’s plans to tackle rising unemployment and worklessness within the Borough. We welcome applications from residents including:
Visit our vacancies pages for opportunities to apply.
The scheme offers Islington residents aged 16 or over a fixed term contract of 12 months to work as an apprentice. Successful candidates will receive training along with an opportunity to gain a nationally recognised qualification.
There are many benefits to the scheme including:
Work Experience – Paid work in a council department. You’ll learn key aspects of the job from professional staff. We offer a variety of types of job and you’ll get an in-depth understanding and first hand experience of how the council works. The valuable skills and experience which you’ll receive will equip you with what you need to move closer to a job with the council or another employer if that’s what you decide you want.
Training – We will pay your study fees and dedicate time for you to prepare for a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). This will be relevant to the area of work that you’ve chosen and be recognised by other employers – not just the council.
Support and Guidance – We’ll provide expert support to guide you through key stages of your journey. You will also have a mentor from the council who will help you settle in and provide support during your time with us. If you decide to move on your mentor will even help you secure work with another employer

The Electoral Services team are responsible for the huge process of managing elections and encouraging residents to vote. Kerry Wickens joined the team as an apprentice:
" I liked the idea of being able to work and study at the same time so the apprentice scheme was a perfect opportunity to do that."
