Libraries, Culture and Sport

Kids in Library

Working right at the heart of our communities across the borough, the libraries, culture and sport teams provide a wide variety of learning and leisure opportunities. Our goals are increased participation in reading, learning, arts and physical activity for all of our residents - whatever their age.

The Library and Heritage Service enables people to reach their potential, providing access to information, ideas, knowledge and creative work. We employ all sorts of people, from Saturday assistants and apprentices to professionally qualified Librarians and museum curators to help deliver our goals. Our libraries, museum and learning centres are busy hubs in their local area, with themed events and promotions helping people to:

  • understand their history and culture
  • find out about opportunities in life
  • access information
  • develop skills using computers, books, DVDs and play

"Our work is all about helping people to get the most out of life. It's incredibly rewarding and varied. One day we're helping with a toddler group and story telling, and the next day we're helping a blind customer select books on CD. We offer a wide range of events and activities and everyone working here gets involved.  As a senior manager in the service my work mostly focuses on developing these opportunities for people, and ensuring that we have the best quality resources to support our staff in their work.
