Highways, Street Services and Greenspace

Old Street

Travelling by road around Islington, you'll see a mix of buildings and open spaces. The council is responsible for maintaining the borough's smaller, non-A roads, parks and public spaces. This is known as Public Realm. Transport for London (TfL) look after the major trunk roads.

To ensure that our highways are safe for our road users, we need to provide a 24/7 response service with teams of staff able to respond at a moment's notice. In addition, we look after street lighting, pavements and traffic engineering.

Many of the jobs in Public Realm naturally involve working outdoors in all parts of Islington at the customer-facing end of our varied roles. There are around 130 parks, open spaces and playgrounds in Islington. Jobs include park rangers, road workers and gardeners with their own specialist training. This work is the highly visible side of the council's services to its residents, but behind this, there is a wealth of other jobs including:

  • contracts officers
  • operations managers
  • project officers and many more

All of them ensure that our environment is as pleasant and welcoming as possible to live, work and play in.
