Assisting Pedestrians and Shoppers
We have introduced a new policy called ‘Islington Streets – Assisting Pedestrians and Shoppers’.
This policy aims to simplify the existing system for managing obstructions like tables and chairs, on our pavements. It will also enable us to meet our obligations to keep Islington as attractive, safe and easy as possible for everyone to move around.
We have consulted with businesses and residents on this policy. We have worked hard to balance commercial needs with the practical needs of residents – such as access for disabled people and those with pushchairs – and to support businesses fairly and equally.
We have introduced a revised system of licence fees from 1 April 2007, applicable to businesses when their current licence expires.
The new fee will take into account the location of the business and the amount of space it wishes to use. It will also cover administration and the costs of marking out the designated area, so it is clear that you have the right to use it and to help people walk round it.
This policy covers non-fixed or temporary objects that obstruct the pavement or street. It does not include objects placed on private forecourts or within trading pitches that are regulated by the Street Trading team. Objects include:
