Food Safety

Food Safety

The Commercial Environmental Health Service works with businesses to ensure that all food and drink produced, stored or sold in Islington is safe to eat.

It does this by:

  • carrying out regular inspections of food businesses at a frequency determined by risk

  • promoting good standards of food safety management through the provision of advice, support and training to food business operators

  • investigating food poisoning outbreaks associated with businesses operating in the borough

  • investigating serious complaints about food purchased by consumers in Islington and complaints about food premises

  • undertaking an annual food sampling programme

  • taking appropriate action in response to food alerts issued by the Food Standards Agency

  • taking appropriate enforcement action where a food business operator fails to meet the required legal standard

  • carrying out a programme of activities to educate food handlers and consumers

Food Poisoning

From time to time people do suffer food poisoning as a result of eating food which has not been handled or stored safely.

If you have recently suffered food poisoning after visiting a restaurant or café in Islington, please contact the Commercial Environmental Health Team using the contact details below.

Scores on the Doors

Every food premises in Islington is given a rating which indicates how well it is complying with the law to provide food that is safe to eat. This rating determines how often the premises will be inspected by Environmental Health Officers and a star rating which is accessible to the public on the web.

All premises are given a ‘scores on the doors’ sticker that shows their star rating. They are encouraged to display this on the premises.

For more information about the scheme follow the link to the Scores on the Doors website on the right.

School Lunch Box Handy Hints
