Medical and Health Services

Primary care is - for many people - the first point of contact with the National Health Service (NHS), whether they want advice or treatment from a GP, the practice nurse, a health visitor, pharmacist, dentist or optometrist.

NHS Islington, formed on April 1 2002, has its own budget, employs its own staff and is responsible for the delivery of services for people who live in Islington. It is responsible for:

  • Improving the health and wellbeing of the local population and reducing inequalities in health
  • Commissioning hospital and other health services
  • Providing and improving primary and community health care services
