Videophone interpreting services have been established in response to the severe shortage of qualified interpreters. Videophone technology allows interpreters to work remotely, by videophone, rather than travelling to the venue, which can offer a more efficient use of interpreting resources. Videophone interpreting provides a valuable service for short notice requests, and is designed for short one-to-one meetings or appointments of up to 30 minutes. It is not appropriate to use videophone interpreting for serious or complex situations, where a face-to-face interpreter should be used.
Islington Council offers access to videophone interpreting for some of its services:
Islington Council's main contact centre, based at 222 Upper Street, has established a videophone interpreting service for its deaf customers.
For more information use SignVideo as a key word in the FAQ directory on the main council website.
